Windmill: The Hofstra Journal of Art & Literature was founded in 2016. Published annually, the literary magazine is edited and designed by the Hofstra English Department’s Publishing Studies capstone students. While our masthead changes annually, the magazine is overseen each year by the Director of Publishing Studies, Kelly McMasters, who can be reached at: kelly.mcmasters (at) hofstra.edu. What is our mission? Windmill publishes fiction, creative nonfiction, art, and literary conversations. We feature emerging writers alongside established and strive to publish the voices of the traditionally unheard and underrepresented. Windmill is in search of compelling narrative engaged in language, place, creativity, and meaning. We especially welcome dynamic stories of injustice, inequality, and unrest told in a compelling, compassionate, and conscientious manner. Why a windmill? As icon and idea, the windmill reflects our journal’s home and energy. Long Island claims the largest number of surviving windmills in America; our university’s founder—William S. Hofstra—is from The Netherlands, a land known for windmills (we also have one on campus!). The windmill was often the center of a village, the place townsfolk gathered and shared stories as they waited for their grain to be processed.
